The municipal district must have been inhabited since ancient times, shown by some stone and bronze utensils which where found in Pilarejo and in the Palomas caves. But it was in the Roman era when Teba, known as Attegua, reached certain renown, especially as the scene of the civil battles between Julius Caesar and Pompeyus partisans. The Romans built the first defensive bastion in what today is called Teba la Vieja. The Muslims reinforced and extended the castle giving it an important walled precinct whose remains can still be visited. It was in the Arab era, when the town began to move from the top of the hill to its actual site and which the Muslims called "Ostipo".
The impressive El Chorro Gorge.Cut through the vast limestone cliffs over millennia by the Guadalhorce River, La Garganta El Chorro asas known in Spanish, is stunning and well worth driving through at the very least. Famous for its concrete catwalk, which hangs precariously along its length, the Camino del Rey is now in grave disrepair.

There are three stunningly beautiful turquoise coloured lakes bordered by pine forests, this is Malagaīs Lake District. There are in fact three artificial lakes created by a dam built across the dramatic 200 m high Guadalhorce river gorge, known as the Gargante del Chorro. Watch out for the eagles that continually circle around the sheer cliffs. |
The town of Alora crowns a small hill over the Guadalhorce river. The castle's towers, once vigil to the comings and goings of men and inland merchandise, in the Bobastro domains, outstand over the city, which shelters discretely between two small headlands and the powerful Hacho mountain (559 m.). .
The municipality extends over an ample territory in which there are the great formations of the Málaga relief. To the north of the Arco Calizo Central (the Antequera range), there is a spectacular landscape of the Sierra de Huma (1,191 m.) and the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes (shared with the neighbouring municipalities of Antequera and Ardales).
To the west of the Sierra de Aguas (949 m.) the lands extend to the mountain complex of Serrania de Ronda, with a landscape of pine groves which goes from the Guadalhorce river to the road which joins Alora with Carratraca more
At the end of the 14th century, the troops of Alfonso XI of Castilla conquered the village and during the following two centuries it was the head of an important territory. One of the most outstanding episodes of Tebaīs history was the death of Black Douglas before his castleīs walls. This character was a commanding officer of the Scottish army, who, on his way to the crusades and carrying the heart of the king of Scotland, Robert The Bruce, allied with the Christian army who at that moment were attacking the castle. There is a commemorative plaque of that battle.

Built in the 1920īs, it was opened by King Alfonso XIII who walked its total length thus giving it its name.Parts of the walk can still be attempted, you will however need a serious head for heights!
