There are certain streets that are used by a large majority of the processions, as in the case of Carretería street whose route make people bring chairs from home.

A key and popular point from which many people like to watch the processions is known as “tribune of the poor.” It is a grand staircase at the end of the Carretería street whose long steps are used as seats.

An important moment in many of the processions of Malaga, are the “runnings”. After the tour of the processions, it’s time to keep (lock) the thrones. The throne of Christ waits at the door to the Virgin and once there, there is a meeting face to face. Despite the normal fatigue after the journey, carriers of thrones begin to rock or lift the thrones to the pulse of the national anthem, as hundreds of followers and brothers of the fraternity give cheers and applause.

Many are the processions not to miss, including those of the brotherhoods of The Arrest, Gypsies, Dew, Paloma or Hope.

In Spain, it is traditional that the Christmas gifts to the children are brought by the Kings the night of 5 to 6 January, competing with the recent introduction of Santa Claus on Christmas customs due to the influence of other cultures.

Parade of the three Holy Kings on the 5th of January

Before, children must send a letter to the kings listing the gifts they want and deserve credit for those who receive them. It is also tradition that the night of January 5, children leave their shoes somewhere in the house, near the door, in a window. Even sweets are left to give to the Kings and water or food for the camels. The next day there are gifts or, in the case of being bad, coal in place (it’s though a sweet coal). Lately also the adults get gifts.
