CAMINITO DEL REY HIDDEN TREASURES : BOBASTRO CASTLE

Near El Caminito del Rey there are other interesting locations worth visiting in El Chorro, Alora and Ardales.

With this post we start our series about “Hidden Treasures of El Caminito del Rey in El Chorro”

BOBASTRO , MEDIEVAL HIDEOUT AND FORTRESS IN EL CHORRO

Bobastro is an ancient archaeological settlement located in the north of the province of Malaga. In the area of the Guadalhorce river, where Omar Ben Hafsun established the capital in its domain in 880, to rebel against the Emir of Córdoba. He acquired castles and lands in a wide area, not only in Malaga, but including portions of the provinces of Cádiz, Granada known then as Elvira, Jaén, and Seville.

There is another theory which puts Bobastro in Ronda. Highlights are the rocks, carved buildings including a church, a castle, and  Mozarabic caves.

Access is from the road-Ardales Alora, about 2 km north of El Chorro and the south side of the Gaitanes Gorge and the Caminito del Rey. From here is a paved path that climbs the hill of Las Mesas de Villaverde.

Part of the ruins of Bobastro can be accessed by foot. At the top of the hill you can enjoy a magnificent view of the surrounding area and you will find there the remains of an ancient fortress. There is also a water tank, the water is pumped at the top to at night to get electricity for the daytime.

THE CHURCH

Omar Ben Hafsun fled to Bobastro in the late ninth century and rebelled against the Emir of Cordoba. He conversted to Christianity in 899 to build this church. The carved rock was probably  performed in the late first century IX or X.
The Mozarabic church is the only known of al-Andalus. It was destroyed by Abdel Rahman III, when, after opposition as a separate kingdom it was conquered after more than 50 years by Cordoba kingdom. It was taken on January 19, 928.

Unearthed in Sand Stone there is a basilica with three naves separated by horseshoe arches, transept and three territories, the central horseshoe arch and the rectangular sides.
Perfectly situated on the east and has a length of 16.50 m long and 10.30 meters wide. In the area there are remains of other buildings that belonged to other people who sought refuge there for hundreds of years.

HOW TO GET THERE.

Visiting Bobastro can be done from the nearby town of Ardales and Alora. These are just 45 minutes from the coast.

The roads are good, but the signals ar not very clear if you’re not from there.

-By Car

We recommend that you take the route from Malaga on the A-357 and then take the exit of Pizarra-Alora. After passing through the beautiful town of Alora you will see the signs for Bobastro. Like everything else in Spain on the way to Bobastro there are many things worth visiting such as: El Chorro Lakes, Gaitanes Gorge and Caminito del Rey, the town of Alora, El Quiosco Restaurant, Restaurante El Mirador and more.

-By Bus

Time tables keep changing and it’s impossible to get an updated timetable for buses to El Chorro. Also, the buses from Malaga, for example, go to the town of Alora, and then you have to wait and change for a bus to El Chorro. With that in mind and as the village of El Chorro sits on a railway station I am going to recommend the train and forget the bus. (see above for trains to El Chorro)

INFO ON ENTRY AND TICKETS

The archeological remains are open all week as follows and though the guided tour is in Spanish the signs and information boards are also in English.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday 10am to 3pm there is a guided tour Approximately every hour (in Spanish)

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 10 am to 3pm (no guided tours on these days).

TIPS AND ADVICE

You need a full morning to visit including the trip. Good thing is that there is plenty to see around there to fill the day. Good location, good walking areas and good food!

Remember that now the ruins of Bobastro are cared for and are only open to the public certain hours of the day. Previously you could just walk in there and do your own  “discoveries”.

Ask a guide to what other things there are to see such as the fortress of Bobastro, the old city walls, the princesses house and several artificial caves that were used by hermits.

Since i have been there many times, and fear they will make the walk into another tourist attraction, i plan to walk it this weekend just before they close it and it changes forever, at least as we know it now….

But first a little bit of history :

HISTORY OF EL CAMINITO DEL REY IN EL CHORRO, ARDALES

el caminito del rey in el chorro old picture

el caminito del rey in el chorro being built

The walkway was built to provide workers at the hydroelectric power plants at Chorro Falls and Gaitanejo Falls with means to cross between them, to provide for transport of materials, and to facilitate inspection and maintenance of the channel. Construction began in 1901 and was finished in 1905.

Twenty years after the pathway was completed, King Alfonso XIII crossed the pathway for the inauguration of a new dam. This led to the pathway’s modern name, “The King’s Little Pathway,” or “El Caminito Del Rey.” After the King’s crossing. However, the bridge began to fall into disrepair.

LOCATION OF EL CAMINITO DEL REY IN EL CHORRO, ARDALES

El Caminito del Rey is located in the natural park of the Lakes of the Guadalhorce, between the areas of Alora, Ardales, and Campillos. A map of the route can be found here.

WHAT TO KNOW

While it is not recommended to attempt a crossing (in fact it is currently illegal), there is a cable running the length of the path one can clip onto. However, the integrity of this cable is unknown. Between 1999 and 2000, four deaths occurred due to the instability of the path. As a result of these deaths, the government has closed both entrances.

In June 2011, the regional government of Andalusia and the local government of Málaga agreed to share costs of restoration (including car parking and a museum) of €9 million. The project will take approximately three years to complete. Many of the original features will remain in place and the new materials that are used will be in keeping with the old design.

WHAT TO SEE

Apart of the walk itself, there are many other things you will se on your way, both natural and historical.

It is considered to be of immense ecological importance. Its walls, which are up to 400 metres high, are home to a variety of plant and animal life, a clear example of adaptation to a vertical way of living. From the point of view of nature, this is a paradise for bird watchers, geologists, and nature lovers in general. Birds you will see here include  the falcon, kestrel and goshawk, as well as other medium-sized birds of prey

Historical : Apart form the story of the building of the path itself, the area houses examples of cave houses dating back to prehistorical times, and used up to the middle of the XX century, including the times of the Civil War. An interesting spot related to this period is the “Escalera de los Republicanos” or “escalera arabe

And dont forget the climbing !!!

TIPS AND THINGS TO CONSIDER

Turon Castle in Ardales : Hidden Tunnels, Treasures and Ghosts

From the “Hidden Treasures of the Costa del Sol” series.

Main walls of Turon Castle in Ardales

Main walls of Turon Castle in Ardales

The Castle of Turón is an Arab Castle near Ardales, in Málada, Spain. Famous for its history in the Reconquest, and lately for the legend of the secret tunnels to the hidden treasure of the Arabs , as well as the ghost stories, apparitions, and Ghostly sounds recorded.

LOCATION

Turon Castle is located 3 km from the Town of Ardales, going upstream the river Turón, or using any of the tracks that follow the river, including the one going over the famous Roman Bridge of Ardales.

GET THERE
To reach the fortress, you have to get to the Town of Ardales, which has a rich history, culture, nature, and gastronomy.

We take the Road A-357 from Málaga City, and it brings us to this town, and once there we look for the Road to “El Burgo”. Just before leaving the town look for the signs of the “Puenteo Romano” or “Puente de la Molina” (Roman bridge, one of the 2 remaining roman bridges still in use in Málaga Province, with three arches and built in the First Century in the times of Emperor August).

After crossing the Bridge, turn left on the track and follow the river on the right side. We will be on a (*) tarmacked road that will bring us to a field on the base of the Castle Towers. From there we will start walking on the track that goes up through the fields, and brings us to the entrance of the fortress, roughly beside the biggest tower on the left.

(*) Up to 1995 this road was still showing the beautiful surface of a Roman Road, with a perfect surface made of stone slabs, showing that the main Roman Road coming from the Coast going to Sevilla and Ronda did pass through here. I am glad I still could see it before the townhall decided it was old junk, and tarmacked it. If any of you has any pictures from back them, please let me now… 🙂

HISTORY

Being fortified by Muhammad V in 1362, as a frontier fortress, from its walls the Arabs defended themselves from the Christian Conquest, that was being organiced from the Nighbouring Castle of Teba. On one of this battles between Arabs and Christians is where the Famous Sir James Douglas was killed. The Castle of Turón was an impressive fortress, with two gates, a maind watchtower that controlled the whole valley. More than ten towers and two walls surrounded the top of the Hill.

The fortress kept its military relation with the kindom of Granada until 1433 when Gómez de Ribera “el Adelantado” took Turón for the Castilians.
After that, the área is abandoned, and starts quickly to decay, being its land and benefits included in the ones of neighbouring Ardales Catle “Peña de Ardales”. Therefor, the Castle of Turón belongs from the XV Century to the Town of Ardales.

WHAT YOU WILL SEE

Turon Castle Views towards Ardales

Turon Castle Views towards Ardales

The views from the Castle are spectacular. You inmediately understand why this place whas chosen to build the fortress. You can see the Sierra de Las Nieves to the West, Ardales to the East, Sierra Huma and El Chorro Lakes, to the South the fields of Alcaparaín, Prieta, Cabrilla and the river Turón. We can really imagine all the battles that took place here between Sevilla and Granada.

LEGEND OF THE TREASURE

There is a legend that says that from the castle there is a secret passage tha goes down to the river, and that it holds the treasures of the Arabs, hidden there before the Castillians took over the Castle. I have heard from old people at Ardales that at the beginning of the XX century there was a deep tunnel with stairs, into which the kids throwed stones not hearing them touching the bottom. Also there are stories of people being seen at night digging at the Castle.
I remember back in the nineties that I saw the beginning of some stairs carved out in the rock going into the mountain. They where partly covered in rubble. If you go nowadays to the Castle you wont find any trace of those stairs, since they are completely covered with stones and rocks.
The stairs and the tunnel are still there under the rubble, so if you want to find the truth behind the legend, I can tell you where to start digging. 🙂

GHOSTS OF TURON

Many stories and legends have been told around the Castel of Turon, and the valley beneath it. Tales involving Sir James Douglas, Omar Ben Afsun from Bobastro, Kings and Princesses, hidden treasures and ghostly figures seen at night and even if full daytime. There even have been recordings of paranormal activity which you can see here :

Approaching Turon Castle in Ardales

Approaching Turon Castle in Ardales

Fantastic location and fantastic walk. Unfortunately nowadays the castle is in big disrepair, and from this Blog we take the opportunity to ask the Townhall of Ardales and the government to try and do something to avoid the entire castle to disappear. This has happened too many times in the past to an extent that the only thing left of them is their memory.

TIPS

  • Tracks are muddy in Winter. Rest of the year they are in good condition for any vehicle. A video of the road here
  • Worth seeing is the Roman bridge, which you cross going to the Castle
  • Check out the famous pastry of Ardales. More on that later on this Blog.
  • The “Fiesta de la Matanza” festival in Ardales in February. Free Food and Free Drinks!
