El Torcal de Antequera is a natural park of ​​1.171 hectares, declared on 18 July 1989. It is located in the municipality of Antequera, in the province of Malaga in Andalusia (Spain) and is known by the strange forms that the various agents of erosion have shaped in limestone, forming an outstanding example of a karst landscape.

HISTORY

Its origins date back to the Jurassic period. At that time the area was a long hallway that connected the sea, from the Gulf of Cadiz to Alicante, the primitive Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. During the changes in the Tertiary or Cenozoic, there was the rise of the sediments deposited at the bottom of the ocean, resulting in mountains, whose summits adopted often form of a mushroom.

El Torcal limestone consists of three types: oolitic and clastic breccia. They all had their origin in the sea between 250 and 150 million years ago. The sediments accumulated on the seabed were cemented by the action of salts and marine dissolution beaker. Then these sediments were pushed more than 1,000 meters above sea level by tectonic forces.

Later, a series of cracks generated fractures and fault systems that intersect at right angles (NW-SE and NE-SW), the erosion and collapse of such cracks has produced what we call today the corridors.

From this point the area is subject to a process of erosion called karst.

The frost wedging in the rock, together with the differential dissolution of limestone for the different effect of the acid present in atmospheric CO2 in the water rain, modeled on the rocks. This has sculpted the rock, creating a comprehensive collection of natural items to which they can attribute similarities with forms of everyday life: the screw, the old hat, the binoculars, the cup, etc.. In addition, the dissolution of rocks at the surface results in what is known as Lenar or lapiaz, rocky terrain where it is difficult to progress by foot.

UNDERGROUND

Like all limestone massifs, the Torcal de Antequera, presents an enormous amount of potholes, caves and other underground forms of which have been explored to date more than one hundred. Vertical depths reach up to 225 meters deep (Union Gap). They are also popular Blue Chasm (-115 m), Sima Women (-90), of Green Navazo, sima Scratch, the Ram. Other horizontal ones are of great historical importance as the Cueva del Toro and Marinaleda prehistoric sites.

The stratigraphic evidence del Toro retains habitat occupancy from the beginning of the Neolithic, Copper Age and up to advanced. In Marinaleda, by contrast, seems rather to be used as a secondary burial. The origin of these cavities also relates to processes of dissolution and widening of limestone, both aerial and underground, by the action of rainwater

From Malaga, taking the N-331, to reach the height of Casabermeja local road that goes to Villanueva de la Concepción, from which it takes about 6 kilometers to reach el Torcal.

From Antequera, taking road 3310 to Villanueva Concepción, meeting with Torcal crossing in about 12 km.

From The Pedrizas leave the N-331 at km. 140.5. Follow the road leading to the latter town (currently in poor condition).
