Guaro Luna Mora Festival 2015

Festival Villa de Guaro

Dates: 11 and 12 September. Location: Guaro. Time: all day. Price: Free

Guaro’s streets will again be filled with candles for the Guaro Luna Mora 2015 in the coming days. This weekend we celebrate the nineteenth edition of the Festival of Guaro for the occasion and have organized many activities: parades, workshops, craft and food stands or storytelling, among others.

The Guaro Luna Mora this year has some very special performances, since the September 11 show will be the return of the “Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía” (the ticket price depends on the location and varies between 15 and 25 euros) and Saturday 12 will be the concert of Antonio Jose, the last winner of  ‘The Voice’  (20 to 30 euros).

Tips & Advice

The police  has established a Special Traffic Plan for the Guaro Luna Mora, whereby from 18.00 Guaro access roads will be cut. Access through the town of Monda (A-7101) will be restricted only to emergency services and people with entrance to the performances in the Auditorio de la Luna Mora. The municipality will have a parking area which is accessed through the A-351.

CAMINITO DEL REY HIDDEN TREASURES : BOBASTRO CASTLE

Near El Caminito del Rey there are other interesting locations worth visiting in El Chorro, Alora and Ardales.

With this post we start our series about “Hidden Treasures of El Caminito del Rey in El Chorro”

BOBASTRO , MEDIEVAL HIDEOUT AND FORTRESS IN EL CHORRO

Bobastro is an ancient archaeological settlement located in the north of the province of Malaga. In the area of the Guadalhorce river, where Omar Ben Hafsun established the capital in its domain in 880, to rebel against the Emir of Córdoba. He acquired castles and lands in a wide area, not only in Malaga, but including portions of the provinces of Cádiz, Granada known then as Elvira, Jaén, and Seville.

There is another theory which puts Bobastro in Ronda. Highlights are the rocks, carved buildings including a church, a castle, and  Mozarabic caves.

Access is from the road-Ardales Alora, about 2 km north of El Chorro and the south side of the Gaitanes Gorge and the Caminito del Rey. From here is a paved path that climbs the hill of Las Mesas de Villaverde.

Part of the ruins of Bobastro can be accessed by foot. At the top of the hill you can enjoy a magnificent view of the surrounding area and you will find there the remains of an ancient fortress. There is also a water tank, the water is pumped at the top to at night to get electricity for the daytime.

THE CHURCH

Omar Ben Hafsun fled to Bobastro in the late ninth century and rebelled against the Emir of Cordoba. He conversted to Christianity in 899 to build this church. The carved rock was probably  performed in the late first century IX or X.
The Mozarabic church is the only known of al-Andalus. It was destroyed by Abdel Rahman III, when, after opposition as a separate kingdom it was conquered after more than 50 years by Cordoba kingdom. It was taken on January 19, 928.

Unearthed in Sand Stone there is a basilica with three naves separated by horseshoe arches, transept and three territories, the central horseshoe arch and the rectangular sides.
Perfectly situated on the east and has a length of 16.50 m long and 10.30 meters wide. In the area there are remains of other buildings that belonged to other people who sought refuge there for hundreds of years.

THE FORTRESS

HOW TO GET THERE.

Visiting Bobastro can be done from the nearby town of Ardales and Alora. These are just 45 minutes from the coast.

The roads are good, but the signals ar not very clear if you’re not from there.

-By Car

We recommend that you take the route from Malaga on the A-357 and then take the exit of Pizarra-Alora. After passing through the beautiful town of Alora you will see the signs for Bobastro. Like everything else in Spain on the way to Bobastro there are many things worth visiting such as: El Chorro Lakes, Gaitanes Gorge and Caminito del Rey, the town of Alora, El Quiosco Restaurant, Restaurante El Mirador and more.

-By Bus

Time tables keep changing and it’s impossible to get an updated timetable for buses to El Chorro. Also, the buses from Malaga, for example, go to the town of Alora, and then you have to wait and change for a bus to El Chorro. With that in mind and as the village of El Chorro sits on a railway station I am going to recommend the train and forget the bus. (see above for trains to El Chorro)

INFO ON ENTRY AND TICKETS

The archeological remains are open all week as follows and though the guided tour is in Spanish the signs and information boards are also in English.

bobastro chorro caminito del rey ticket sales

bobastro chorro caminito del rey ticket sales

Friday, Saturday and Sunday 10am to 3pm there is a guided tour Approximately every hour (in Spanish)

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 10 am to 3pm (no guided tours on these days).

TIPS AND ADVICE

You need a full morning to visit including the trip. Good thing is that there is plenty to see around there to fill the day. Good location, good walking areas and good food!

Remember that now the ruins of Bobastro are cared for and are only open to the public certain hours of the day. Previously you could just walk in there and do your own  “discoveries”.

Ask a guide to what other things there are to see such as the fortress of Bobastro, the old city walls, the princesses house and several artificial caves that were used by hermits.

Baños de Vilo : The Lost Arab Baths of Periana

From the “Hidden Treasures of the Costa del Sol” series.

The old Moorish sulphur baths at Baños de Vilo (Baths of Vilo) are about three kilometres outside Periana.

The baths are sometimes described as Arab, Moorish or Roman and no-one knows for sure how old they are. Certainly they were in use during the latter half of the 18th century and fulfilled the Koranic obligations for Muslims which obliges them to wash before prayer. I n the 18th and 19th centuries visitors were the nobility and high society from all over Spain.

The medicinal properties of the spring water also attracted many people with skin problems and the brave can still bathe in the water which is a constant 21 degrees centigrade all year round. This temperature is about four degrees above the average for the area and means the baths can be classified as thermal.

The underground supply constantly refreshes the pool and its sulphurous smell can be observed from quite a distance. Recent studies have shown the waters to contain: sulphites, chloride, calcium, sodium and magnesium and has a flow rate of .3l/sec.

The baths and associated buildings fell into disrepair in the last century and it was only after the purchase of the property by the Periana Council, about twenty years ago that repairs were undertaken.

The authorities in Andalusia now promote these type of baths under the name “Thermaland” and have decreed that they will “work towards promoting the touristic exploitation of mineral and thermal springs, and to renovate other abandoned baths.”

The hamlet of Baños de Vilo is attractive particularly in springtime with the surrounding land covered with wild flowers and a short detour will bring you to Guaro the source of the river of the same name. The river Guaro is important for the area in that it is the main supply for Lake Viñuela which dominates most views of the valley surrounding Periana.

periana baños de vilo

After a narrow entrance into the village of Guaro the road opens out and there is plenty of parking near the source of the river. A noisy waterfall at the base of the mountain wall directs the water flow down the river to the lake below.

There is one restaurant in this otherwise sleepy village where you can obtain refreshment and enjoy wonderful views of the valley.

To find the baths from Cantueso go to the village, turn right at the roundabout and then take the road towards Mondron. Just after leaving the village boundary there is a fork in the road and it is best to keep left signed to Mondron. After a short while you will see the turning right to Baños de Vilo which is signed, but not very prominently.

periana baños de vilo the spring

You will then find the baths on the left after a short while. The road is quite wide at this point and parking on the road is possible. To also visit the village of Guaro continue up hill and follow signs, about three kilometres more.

marbella torre lance de las canas

Lance de las Cañas Turret : A forgotten Monument in Marbella

From the “Hidden Treasures of the Costa del Sol” series.

This tower is located next to the beach near an old Civil Guard barracks and in the vicinity of other buildings. Its surroundings are rather deteriorated and its eastern face has a hole at ground level. It was built in the second half of the 18th century as an artillery emplacement. The tower is shaped like a horseshoe. It has a prolonged semi-circular ground plan with two oblique spurs or hornwork behind it. Its perimeter measures 53.35 metres and its height exceeds 10 metres.

marbella unrestored torre lance de las canas

marbella unrestored torre lance de las cañas

Inside there are two floors and the surface area in them increases as we ascend while the thickness of its external walls is reduced. The lower or basement floor constitutes the powder magazine (at ground level). The upper floor or main room is well lighted by two large windows and covered like the basement by a vaulted brick ceiling. All the necessary services (larder, chimney, etc.) are aligned along the northern retaining wall. Lastly, there is a spacious roof terrace with a parapet and a hole to act as a chimney. Two stairways communicate the different rooms with the roof terrace. Access to the tower is at a height of six metres above the ground on the western face of the right-hand spur. It was built with masonry and complemented with bricks on several elements like the corners, door jambs and heads, embrasures, parapet mouldings and internal vaults and walls.

marbella lance de las cañas after restoration

marbella lance de las cañas after restoration

It is a monument that has been declared as a Heritage of Cultural Interest 1985 (Bien de Interés Cultural). Historical data: The frequency of raids along this sector by expeditions which at times amounted to up to two thousand men as a result of the cooperation established between Turks and North African Muslims led to such sanguinary events like the sacking of Gibraltar by Baba Aruj or “Barbarossa” in 1450. This led the emperor to reinforce the fortifications with a new model that could boost defensive combat capabilities. His aim was perhaps to build this kind of buildings along the entire coastline. Four forts of this kind were built in the province of Malaga, of which three are to be found in this sector.

UPDATE : The tower has been completely restored and is very well worth a visit nowadays
