Periana heeft een subtropisch klimaat en een breed assortiment van wilde bloemen, amandel-en sinaasappelbloesems in het voorjaar. Het dorp is beroemd om hun olijven en perziken.


In augustus viert het dorp de ‘Peaches Festival en de olijvenoogst worden gevierd met het “Groene Olijven Feest’ in maart.


Het dorp bestaat uit smalle en steile straatjes met winkels, supermarkten, bars en vele gezellige restaurants en alle gebruikelijke voorzieningen van een bruisende stad.


In het noorden van Periana zijn de Moorse zwavelbaden van Baños de Vilo, onlangs gerestaureerd en geliefd om zijn geneeskrachtige eigenschappen. Veel in en rond Periana wordt gekenmerkt door de Moorse invloeden uit het verleden inclusief de keuken en lokale specialiteiten.

De lokale mensen zijn erg vriendelijk en vrijgevig met sinaasappelen, avocado’s, amandelen, vijgen, asperges en granaatappels die groeien in de velden en langs de wegen rond het dorp. In de restaurants vindt u gerechten zoals ‘Chachorenas’ bittere sinaasappel soep of “Ajo Blanco ‘een heerlijke knoflooksoep.


De architectuur van Periana is Moors en de dorpskerk van San Isidoro heeft ‘Mudejar‘ invloeden. De kerk, genoemd naar de patroonheilige van Periana, werd volledig herbouwd in 1884 na een aardbeving die bijna het hele dorp verwoesten.


Isidro was een boer in de 11e eeuw en beroemd om zijn vermogen om water te vinden. Het feest van St. Isidro wordt gehouden op en rond 15 mei en het hele dorp viert dan feest. Nu zal ik u meer vertellen over dit feest, want het is heel erg bijzonder.


In mei gaan alle mensen van Cantueso het dorp in om de festiviteiten te vieren. Dit is ter gelegenheid van “San Isidro” een jaarlijks terugkerend evenement van meerdere dagen met veel plezier voor alle leeftijden.

San Isidro Labrador is de patroonheilige van Periana en eenmaal per jaar vieren de inwoners een succesvolle oogst met een processie door de straten en neemt enkele uren in beslag waarna daarna de feesten starten.

In de geschiedenis van dit feest wordt gezegd dat er een tijd een slechte zomer was met weinig regen en een daaruit ontstond een voortvloeiende lage opbrengst oogst.

De lokale boeren paradeerden langs het standbeeld van St Isidro hoewel de velden en daarna de oogst verbeterden. Vervolgens waren de dorpsbewoners dankbaar en waren geneigd om een hoeveelheid graan te geven (namelijk hun gewicht) als dank.


Het beeld van Sint Isidro, versierd met spikes en rode en witte anjers is speciaal geconstrueerd dat er graan gegoten wordt van bovenaf en door gaat in een trechter hieronder.

Jaren geleden konden alleen de rijken het veroorloven om tarwe (nooit enig ander graan) te doneren. Veel andere families hadden slechts alleen genoeg voor hun eigen gezin maar tegenwoordig zijn veel dorpelingen blij om deel te kunnen nemen als dank voor hun families’gezondheid en voorspoed. En ja!
